Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults, and it is close to painless until it is advanced. That is what makes it dangerous — bleeding when you brush is the early warning, and it is very easy to ignore for years.
What happens underneath is that the bone holding the teeth is slowly lost. Bone does not grow back on its own. Treatment can stop the process and save the teeth, but it cannot rebuild what has already gone, so the single most useful thing is to come in while the only symptom is bleeding.
Treatment is led by Dr Kavya Mathur, an MDS periodontist. Depending on how advanced the disease is, that ranges from a deep clean under the gumline through to flap surgery to access and clean the roots directly, and grafting to rebuild lost tissue.
Gum health is also what decides whether other work lasts. Dental implants placed in bone that is receding will loosen, and veneers bonded to teeth with inflamed, bleeding gums look wrong within a year. This is why Dr Kavya assesses the gums before agreeing to any cosmetic plan, and occasionally why she declines one until the foundation is treated.
What gum treatment involves

Periodontal assessment
We measure the depth of the pockets around each tooth and X-ray the bone level. This gives a real diagnosis rather than a guess.

Deep cleaning
Scaling and root planing removes deposits from below the gumline, often under local anaesthetic.

Surgery if needed
Flap surgery folds the gum back to clean the root surfaces directly where pockets are too deep to reach otherwise.

Maintenance
Gum disease is controlled rather than cured. Three-monthly maintenance is what keeps it from returning.
Gum treatment in Jodhpur — common questions
My gums bleed but do not hurt. Is that a problem?
Yes. Bleeding is inflammation, and inflammation is the disease process. Painlessness is why people leave it until teeth are loose — by which point the bone that was lost cannot be recovered.
Can loose teeth be saved?
Sometimes. If the looseness is from inflammation, treating it firms them up. If most of the supporting bone is gone, it cannot be rebuilt and the tooth will eventually be lost — and we will tell you which situation you are in honestly.
Is there a link with diabetes?
A strong two-way one. Diabetes makes gum disease worse and gum disease makes blood sugar harder to control. If you are diabetic, tell us — it changes how often you should be seen.
Will treatment make my teeth sensitive?
Often, for a few weeks after a deep clean, because root surfaces that were covered by deposits are now exposed. It settles, and a sensitive-teeth toothpaste helps in the meantime.
