Oral and maxillofacial surgery covers the mouth, jaws and face — the part of dentistry that crosses into surgery proper. It is a separate three-year specialist degree after the dental qualification, and most dental clinics do not have anyone holding it.
The work ranges widely: correcting a jaw that is too far forward or back and cannot be fixed by braces alone, repairing jaw and cheekbone fractures after an accident, removing cysts and growths from the jaw, and treating jaw joint (TMJ) problems that cause clicking, locking and facial pain.

Not every jaw complaint needs surgery, and part of the consultation is establishing that. Pain at the joint is more often a bite or clenching problem than a structural one, and an impacted lower tooth pressing on a nerve is a wisdom tooth case rather than a jaw case. What is the difference between an oral surgeon and a general dentist?
A general dentist holds a BDS. An oral and maxillofacial surgeon has completed an additional MDS specialising in surgery of the mouth, jaws and face, and is trained to operate on facial bone. Dr Suveet holds that MDS.
Is corrective jaw surgery cosmetic?
It is usually functional — the reason to do it is a bite that does not work, difficulty chewing, or sleep and breathing problems. Facial appearance changes as a consequence. Purely cosmetic requests are assessed carefully and honestly, and we will say so if we do not think surgery is warranted.
Do you handle emergency facial injuries?
Contact us and we will advise. Significant facial trauma needs hospital assessment first — if that is what your case needs, we will tell you to go there rather than come here.
Is this covered by RGHS?
RGHS covers medically necessary dental surgery such as fractures and cyst removal, but not cosmetic treatment. Ask us about your specific case and current empanelment status before you plan around it.
