Clear aligners are a series of transparent trays, each moving the teeth a fraction further than the last. You change to the next tray every one to two weeks and wear each one 20 to 22 hours a day, taking them out to eat and to clean your teeth.
The appeal for working adults is obvious: they are hard to notice, nothing is bonded to your teeth, and you can take them out for a wedding or a presentation. They are also gentler on the gums than brackets, and easier to keep clean.
The honest limitation is that they are not right for everything. Severe crowding, large rotations and significant bite corrections are still better handled by braces. And they only work while they are in your mouth — a patient who leaves them out will get no result at all. We will tell you at the consultation which of the two suits your case.
Aligners change position, not colour. If the shade of your teeth is as much of a concern as the alignment, teeth whitening once the aligners come off gives a far better result than whitening beforehand — the teeth have moved, and the surfaces that were overlapping are now on show.
Straightening also tends to reveal what else you were not looking at. Once the teeth are in line, worn edges and old discoloured composite show up more clearly, and a small amount of bonding or, in some cases, veneers finishes the job properly. Dr Kavya will tell you at the planning stage whether that is likely, so it is in the estimate rather than a surprise at the end. Every case starts with a check-up and a scan before any aligner is ordered.

Are clear aligners as effective as braces?
For mild to moderate cases, yes. For severe crowding, large rotations or significant bite corrections, braces still do it better and often faster. We will tell you honestly which one your case needs rather than selling you the more expensive option.
Will they affect my speech?
A slight lisp for the first few days, which goes as your tongue adjusts. Most people notice it more than anyone listening does.
What happens if I do not wear them enough?
Treatment stalls and the trays stop fitting, and you end up needing new ones. This is the single biggest reason aligner treatment fails. If you know you will not be disciplined about it, braces are the better investment.
Can I eat with them in?
No — take them out to eat and to drink anything other than water, then brush before putting them back. Staining and decay under the tray are otherwise a real risk.
