A cavity is decay that has eaten through the enamel into the softer tooth beneath. Left alone it keeps going, and once it reaches the nerve a simple filling is no longer enough — that is when a root canal becomes the only way to save the tooth.
A filling stops that progression. We remove the decayed part, clean the cavity and rebuild the tooth with a composite material matched to your tooth colour. One visit, and you can eat normally the same day.
If you have been putting it off because the tooth does not hurt yet, that is exactly the right time to do it. Pain means the decay has already reached the nerve.
There is a point where a filling stops being the right answer. Once decay has taken enough of the tooth that there is not much left to hold a filling in, it will keep breaking — and a crown, which wraps the whole tooth, lasts where a large filling will not. We will tell you which side of that line your tooth is on.

Fillings in Jodhpur — common questions
Silver or tooth-coloured filling — which is better?
We place tooth-coloured composite as standard. It bonds to the tooth, needs less healthy tooth to be removed, and is invisible. Silver amalgam is cheaper and lasts well in back teeth, but it is not what most patients want now.
How long does a filling last?
A well-placed composite filling lasts several years and often much longer. It depends on the size of the cavity, where it is, and whether you grind your teeth.
My tooth is sensitive after the filling. Is that normal?
Mild sensitivity to cold for a week or two is normal, especially after a deep filling. Sensitivity that worsens, or pain that lingers after the cold goes, needs checking — tell us.
