Whitening lightens the natural colour of the tooth using a peroxide gel. It is different from a cleaning: scaling removes surface staining from tea, coffee and tobacco, whitening changes the underlying shade. Many people who ask for whitening actually need a cleaning, and we will say so rather than take the larger fee.
In-clinic whitening is done in a single appointment under supervision, with the gums protected. Take-home kits use custom trays and a gentler gel over a couple of weeks, and reach a similar result more gradually.
One thing to know before you start: whitening does not change the colour of crowns, veneers or fillings. If you have a crown on a front tooth, whitening the teeth around it will leave it looking darker — which is exactly why colour matching comes after whitening, never before.

Does whitening damage the enamel?
Professionally supervised whitening at the correct concentration does not damage enamel. Unsupervised high-strength gels bought online, and repeated over-use, can — which is the real argument for having it done properly.
How long does it last?
Six months to two years, depending on how much tea, coffee and tobacco you consume afterwards. Top-ups are straightforward once you have trays.
Will it work on my crowns and fillings?
No. Only natural tooth responds. If you have crowns or fillings on front teeth, plan to replace or match them after whitening — we will factor that into the cost upfront.
Is it painful?
Some sensitivity to cold for a day or two is common and settles. Tell us if your teeth are already sensitive — we can adjust the gel and the timing.
