Plaque that is left on the teeth hardens into tartar within days, and once it is hard no amount of brushing removes it. It sits at the gumline, keeps the gums inflamed, and is the reason gums bleed when you brush.
Scaling removes it with an ultrasonic tip; polishing smooths the surfaces afterwards so plaque takes longer to build back up. It is the cheapest treatment in dentistry and the one that prevents the most expensive ones.
There is a persistent belief that scaling loosens teeth or damages enamel. It does neither. What it does is remove the tartar that was hiding gum recession that had already happened — the teeth feel different because you can finally feel where the gumline actually is.
A clean is also the sensible first step before anything cosmetic. Patients often come in asking about teeth whitening and leave having had a scaling instead, because once the tartar and staining are off, the shade underneath is better than they expected.

Scaling & polishing in Jodhpur — common questions
Does scaling loosen the teeth?
No. This is the most common worry we hear and it is a myth. Tartar does not hold teeth in — bone and gums do. If teeth feel loose after a cleaning, the looseness was already there and the tartar was masking it.
Does it hurt?
It is uncomfortable rather than painful, and more so if your gums are already inflamed. If your gums are very sore we can numb the area.
How often should I get it done?
Every six months for most people. More often if you smoke, chew tobacco or paan, or have diabetes or gum disease.
