PRP uses your own blood. A small sample is spun in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets, which carry the growth factors involved in healing, and that concentrate is then injected into the treatment area.
In this clinic it has two uses. In surgery, PRP placed into an extraction or graft site supports healing — which is where a maxillofacial practice first comes across it. Separately it is used in the face and scalp, for skin quality and for thinning hair.
It is worth being straight about expectations: PRP is a course of treatments rather than a single fix, results vary between individuals, and it works better for thinning hair than for areas that are already bald. We will tell you at consultation if we do not think you are a good candidate.
In the clinic we use PRP most often alongside surgery rather than on its own — with bone grafting, or after a difficult extraction — because concentrating your own platelets at the site is a straightforward way to help the area close and settle.

Is PRP safe?
It uses your own blood, so there is no risk of rejection or of an allergic reaction to a foreign substance. Expect some soreness and redness at the injection sites for a day or two.
How many sessions will I need?
Usually three to four, spaced about a month apart, then occasional maintenance. A single session is not a course of treatment.
Will it regrow hair I have already lost?
It works best on thinning hair where follicles are still active. It will not regrow hair in areas that are fully bald, and we would say so at consultation rather than take your money.
