Munh Ke Chhale (Mouth Ulcers): Kyon Hote Hain aur Kab Dikhana Zaroori Hai

Medically reviewed by Dr Suveet Mathur, BDS, MDS — Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery ·

Quick answer

Most mouth ulcers, or munh ke chhale, are harmless and heal on their own within one to two weeks. Common causes are biting the cheek, a sharp tooth or brace, stress, very spicy food and, when ulcers keep returning, low iron, vitamin B12 or folate. Any ulcer or patch that has not healed within three weeks must be checked, because early mouth cancer can look like an ordinary ulcer.

Hinglish me: Zyaadatar munh ke chhale nuksaandeh nahi hote aur ek-do hafte me apne aap theek ho jaate hain. Aam kaaran hain gaal kat jaana, nukeela daant ya brace, tanaav, bahut teekha khaana, aur baar-baar chhale hon to iron, vitamin B12 ya folate ki kami. Jo chhala ya daag teen hafte me theek na ho, use zaroor dikhayein, kyonki shuruaati munh ka cancer bhi saadharan chhale jaisa dikh sakta hai.

Mouth ulcers are one of the most searched health problems in India: about 135,000 searches a month for mouth ulcers alone, and many more in Hinglish. Nearly all are minor. This guide explains how to tell an ordinary chhala from one that needs a closer look, and what actually helps it heal.

It is written by Pain-Off Dental Care in Sardarpura, Jodhpur, where Dr Suveet Mathur, an MDS oral and maxillofacial surgeon, examines and, when needed, biopsies ulcers and patches that have not healed. This matters especially in Rajasthan, where chewing gutkha, paan and areca nut is common.

Munh ke chhale kya hote hain? (What mouth ulcers are)

Mouth ulcers, called munh ke chhale, are small, painful sores inside the mouth, usually round or oval with a white or yellow centre and a red edge. The most common kind, aphthous ulcers, appear on the inner cheeks, lips, tongue or under the tongue, and heal on their own within one to two weeks. They are not contagious.

Munh me chhale kyon hote hain? (Causes)

Mouth ulcers are most often caused by minor injury, such as biting the cheek, a sharp or broken tooth, a rough filling or braces, and by stress, lack of sleep, very spicy or acidic food, and hormonal changes. Ulcers that keep coming back can be linked to low iron, vitamin B12 or folate, or to gut conditions, which a doctor can test for.

Many people in India say chhale come from pet ki garmi, heat in the stomach. There is no evidence for that as a cause, but things often blamed alongside it, such as very spicy food, stress and poor sleep in hot weather, can contribute. Treating the real trigger works better than cooling remedies.

Chhale jaldi kaise theek karein? (What helps them heal)

To help mouth ulcers heal faster, rinse with warm salt water a few times a day, avoid spicy, salty, sour and very hot food until they settle, brush gently with a soft brush, and ask a pharmacist for an over-the-counter mouth ulcer gel. Smoothing a sharp tooth or rough filling stops ulcers that keep coming back in the same place.

  • Helps: warm salt-water rinses, soft and cool food like curd and khichdi, plenty of water, a soft toothbrush.
  • Avoid until healed: chilli, pickle, citrus, very hot chai, crisps, gutkha and tobacco.
  • See a dentist: if a sharp tooth, broken filling or brace keeps cutting the same spot.
  • See a doctor: if ulcers keep returning every few weeks, to check iron, B12 and folate.

3 hafte ka niyam: kab doctor ko dikhayein? (The three-week rule)

Any mouth ulcer, white patch, red patch or lump that has not healed within three weeks should be examined by a dentist or doctor, as NHS guidance also advises. See someone sooner if the ulcer is painless and hard, keeps growing, bleeds easily, or comes with numbness, a loose tooth with no clear reason, or a lump in the neck.

Chhala ya cancer? Gutkha aur tambaku ka khatra (When it is not just a chhala)

Most mouth ulcers are not cancer, but early mouth cancer can look like an ulcer that does not heal, and it is often painless. India has one of the highest rates of oral cancer in the world, largely because of chewing tobacco, gutkha, paan and areca nut. Anyone who chews and has a patch or ulcer lasting three weeks should have it examined promptly.

A biopsy, removing a small piece of tissue under local anaesthetic for laboratory testing, is the only way to know what a suspicious patch is. Found early, mouth cancer is far more treatable. Stopping tobacco and areca nut is the single most important step for anyone who chews.

  • An ulcer that has not healed in three weeks, especially if painless or hard-edged.
  • A white patch (leukoplakia) or red patch that cannot be wiped off.
  • Stiff, pale inner cheeks and difficulty opening the mouth (oral submucous fibrosis), linked to areca nut and gutkha.
  • A lump or thickening in the cheek, tongue or neck, or unexplained numbness.

Baar-baar chhale hona (Ulcers that keep coming back)

Recurrent mouth ulcers, appearing every few weeks, are usually minor aphthous ulcers, but they are worth investigating. A doctor can check blood levels of iron, vitamin B12 and folate, and look for gut conditions such as coeliac disease. A dentist can look for a sharp tooth, an ill-fitting denture or a brace that keeps injuring the same spot.

Common questions

Chhale kitne din me theek hote hain?

Most ordinary mouth ulcers heal on their own within one to two weeks without leaving a scar. Larger ulcers can take up to six weeks. Any ulcer that has not healed within three weeks should be examined by a dentist or doctor, even if it does not hurt.

Are mouth ulcers contagious?

Ordinary mouth ulcers (aphthous ulcers) are not contagious and cannot be passed on by kissing or sharing food. Cold sores, which are small blisters usually on the outside of the lip, are different: they are caused by the herpes simplex virus and are contagious until they crust over.

Kya vitamin ki kami se chhale hote hain?

Yes, sometimes: low levels of iron, vitamin B12 or folate are linked to mouth ulcers that keep coming back. A simple blood test arranged by a doctor shows whether you are deficient. Taking supplements without a test is not advised, because the real cause may be something else.

Bachchon ke munh me chhale ho to kya karein?

Mouth ulcers in children are usually from biting the cheek, a rough tooth or a viral infection such as hand, foot and mouth disease, and heal within one to two weeks. Give cool, soft food and plenty of fluids. See a doctor if the child stops drinking, has a high fever, or ulcers last more than two weeks.

Jeebh par chhale kyon hote hain? (Ulcers on the tongue)

Ulcers on the tongue are usually caused by biting it, a sharp tooth rubbing the side, very hot or spicy food, or the same triggers as other mouth ulcers. Most heal in one to two weeks. A sore on the side of the tongue that lasts three weeks, feels hard or keeps growing must be examined, because the tongue is a common site for mouth cancer.

Gutkha khaane walon ko kya dhyan rakhna chahiye?

People who chew gutkha, paan, tobacco or areca nut should check their mouth regularly and see a dentist about any white or red patch, ulcer, lump or stiffness that lasts three weeks. These habits are the main cause of mouth cancer in India. A dental check-up at Pain-Off Dental Care in Jodhpur includes a mouth cancer screening.

Pregnancy me munh me chhale ho to?

Mouth ulcers are common in pregnancy because of hormonal changes and sometimes low iron or folate. Rinse with warm salt water and keep food mild. Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any ulcer gel or medicine, and mention ulcers at your antenatal check, as your iron and folate levels may need checking.
