We would rather save a tooth than remove one, and we will tell you when saving it is realistic. But some teeth are beyond repair: split down the root, decayed below the gum, or loose from advanced gum disease. Keeping those is not caution, it is just a slower version of the same outcome with more pain along the way.
An extraction under proper local anaesthetic should not hurt. You will feel firm pressure — that is the tooth moving, and it is meant to happen.
The part that matters most comes after. Leaving a gap has consequences: neighbouring teeth tilt into it and the opposing tooth drifts down out of its socket. We will always discuss replacing the tooth before we take it out, not months later once the drift has begun.

Does it hurt?
Not during, under anaesthetic — you will feel pressure, not pain. Afterwards, soreness for two to three days that ordinary painkillers handle.
What is a dry socket and how do I avoid it?
It is when the blood clot in the socket is lost and the bone is exposed — painful, and it starts around day three. Avoid it by not smoking, not rinsing hard and not using a straw for the first 48 hours. Smoking is by far the biggest risk factor.
