Dr Kavya Mathur is a gold-medalist periodontist: a specialist in the gums and the bone that hold your teeth in place. It is the least glamorous speciality in dentistry and the one that decides whether cosmetic work lasts. Veneers on unhealthy gums fail, and an implant placed in bone that is receding will not hold.
She leads the clinic's cosmetic and smile design work — veneers, whitening, gum contouring and the full smile makeover — and holds an MDS in oral implantology alongside her periodontics training, so she places implants as well as maintaining the foundation they sit in.
Most cosmetic consultations here start with her assessing gum health before any treatment is discussed. If a smile makeover is on your mind, that assessment is the honest starting point, and sometimes the answer is that the gums need treating first.

Common questions
What is a periodontist, and why does it matter for cosmetic work?
A periodontist is a specialist in the gums and the bone supporting the teeth, with an MDS in that field. It matters because the gumline frames every smile and because cosmetic work built on unhealthy gums fails — veneers on inflamed gums look wrong within a year, and implants placed in receding bone do not hold.
Will I be told I need veneers when whitening would do?
No. A large share of people who come in asking for veneers need whitening, and a fair number who ask for whitening need a cleaning. We recommend the smallest treatment that gets you the result you want, and say so even when it is the smaller fee.
Can I see what my smile will look like before committing?
Yes. For veneer and smile-design cases we do a mock-up on your own teeth so you can see the proposed shape before any enamel is touched. Nobody should agree to front-tooth work on the basis of a verbal description.
My gums bleed. Can I still have cosmetic treatment?
Not until the bleeding is treated. Bleeding means inflammation, and inflammation is active gum disease. Treating it first is not a delay tactic — it is what makes the cosmetic result last.
