The goal with a child's first few dental visits is not really the teeth. It is making sure they are not scared of the place, because a child frightened at six avoids dentists at twenty-six and arrives with problems that did not need to happen.
We keep first visits short and unhurried. Often the first appointment is nothing more than a ride in the chair, a count of the teeth and a sticker.
Milk teeth matter more than parents expect. They hold the space for adult teeth, and a milk tooth lost early to decay lets the neighbouring teeth drift — which is how a child ends up needing braces that they would not otherwise have needed.

My child's milk tooth is decayed. Does it matter, it will fall out anyway?
It matters. A decayed milk tooth can abscess and cause real pain, and if it comes out early the neighbouring teeth drift into the gap — which crowds the adult tooth that was meant to arrive there.
At what age should braces be considered?
We like to assess around age 8 to 10, while the jaw is still growing. Treatment itself usually starts later, but spotting a problem early sometimes means a much simpler treatment later.
Can I stay with my child during treatment?
Yes, always. For younger children it helps; some older children do better on their own.
