Dant Hil Raha Hai? Loose Tooth: Kaaran, Kya Karein aur Kab Bachta Hai
Medically reviewed by Dr Kavya Mathur, BDS, MDS — Periodontics & Oral Implantology · Gold Medallist ·
Quick answer
A loose adult tooth is never normal. The most common cause is gum disease destroying the bone that holds the tooth; others are an injury, teeth grinding, or an infection at the root. Many loose teeth can be saved if treated early, so see a dentist within a few days, and the same day after an injury. In children aged about 6 to 12, a loose milk tooth is normal.
Hinglish me: Bade insaan ka daant hilna kabhi normal nahi hota. Sabse aam kaaran masudon ki bimari hai jo daant ko pakadne wali haddi ko khatam karti hai; doosre kaaran chot, daant peesna ya jad me infection hain. Jaldi ilaj ho to kai hilte daant bach jaate hain, isliye kuch din me dentist ko dikhayein, aur chot lagi ho to usi din. 6 se 12 saal ke bachchon me doodh ka daant hilna normal hai.
Searches like dant hil raha hai to kya karein and dant hilna kaise band karein come up constantly in Hinglish. For adults the answer depends almost entirely on why the tooth is loose, and on how much bone is still holding it, which only an examination and X-ray can show.
This guide is written by Pain-Off Dental Care in Sardarpura, Jodhpur, where gum and bone problems are treated by Dr Kavya Mathur, an MDS periodontist, and injuries and surgical cases by Dr Suveet Mathur, an MDS oral and maxillofacial surgeon.
Daant hilne ke kaaran (Why adult teeth become loose)
Adult teeth become loose for four main reasons: gum disease (periodontitis) destroying the supporting bone, an injury from a fall, accident or sport, heavy grinding or clenching that overloads the tooth, and infection at the root tip. Less often, pregnancy hormones loosen teeth slightly, and rarely a cyst or growth in the jaw is the cause.
Masudon ki bimari aur hilte daant (Gum disease, the commonest cause)
Gum disease is the most common reason adults lose teeth. Bacteria under the gums slowly destroy the bone and fibres around the root, usually without pain, so the first sign many people notice is a tooth that moves. Bleeding gums, bad breath, gums pulling back and teeth drifting apart usually come first. Treated early, the remaining bone can be kept.
Chot lagne se daant hila (After an injury)
A tooth loosened or pushed out of position by a fall or accident should be seen by a dentist the same day. Do not wiggle it. Bite gently on a clean cloth, and eat soft food on the other side. The dentist can reposition the tooth and splint it to its neighbours while it heals, and checks with an X-ray for a broken root or jaw.
- Knocked out completely: hold it by the crown, rinse briefly in milk, push it back or keep it in milk, and see a dentist within the hour.
- Pushed out of line or loose after a blow: same-day dentist.
- Face or jaw injury with a head injury, heavy bleeding or difficulty breathing: hospital emergency department first.
Kya hilta daant bach sakta hai? (Can a loose tooth be saved?)
Many loose teeth can be saved. A tooth loosened by gum inflammation often firms up after deep cleaning; a tooth loosened by injury often settles after splinting; and one loosened by grinding can tighten once a night guard takes the load off. A tooth that has lost most of its supporting bone usually cannot be saved and is replaced later with an implant or bridge.
Ghar par kya karein, kya na karein (Until you see a dentist)
Until you see a dentist, keep the loose tooth clean with gentle brushing, chew on the other side, and avoid hard or sticky food. Do not wiggle the tooth, tie it to the next one, or try to pull it out yourself. There is no home remedy or tablet that tightens a loose adult tooth; the cause has to be treated.
Bachchon ke hilte doodh ke daant (Children's milk teeth)
A loose milk tooth between about 6 and 12 years old is normal: the adult tooth underneath is pushing it out. Let it come out by itself or with gentle wiggling. See a dentist if a milk tooth is loose much earlier, after an injury, with swelling or pain, or if the adult tooth is coming in behind a milk tooth that has not fallen out.

Common questions
Dant hil raha hai to kya karein?
If an adult tooth is loose, see a dentist within a few days, and the same day if it follows an injury. Keep it clean, chew on the other side and avoid hard food, but do not wiggle it or try to pull it out. An examination and X-ray show whether gum disease, injury, grinding or infection is the cause, which decides whether it can be saved.
Dant hilna kaise band karein? (Can a loose tooth tighten?)
A loose tooth tightens only when its cause is treated. Deep cleaning for gum disease, splinting after an injury, or a night guard for grinding often lets the tooth firm up over weeks. No toothpaste, mouthwash, tablet or home remedy tightens a loose adult tooth, and waiting usually lets more bone be lost.
Can a loose tooth from gum disease be saved?
Often, yes, if enough bone remains. Deep cleaning below the gums removes the infection, and the gum and remaining bone then hold the tooth more firmly. Gum surgery may be needed in deeper cases. Where most of the bone is gone, the tooth will eventually be lost. Gum measurements and an X-ray show which applies.
Is a loose tooth in pregnancy normal?
Teeth can feel slightly loose in pregnancy because hormones affect the ligaments and gums, and pregnancy gingivitis makes gums swell and bleed. This usually settles after the baby is born. A dental check-up and cleaning are safe during pregnancy and keep gum disease from developing. Tell the dentist you are pregnant.
Can teeth grinding make teeth loose?
Yes. Heavy grinding or clenching, often at night, overloads the teeth and the ligaments holding them, and can make teeth loose, sore or worn flat, especially if gum disease is also present. A custom night guard from a dentist takes the force off the teeth while the causes of grinding, such as stress or poor sleep, are addressed.
Should a loose tooth be pulled out?
A loose adult tooth should not be pulled out at home. Many can be saved, and removing a tooth yourself risks breaking it, leaving the root behind, bleeding and infection. A dentist will advise removal only if the tooth cannot be saved, and can plan an implant or bridge to fill the gap.
Bachche ka daant hil raha hai, kab nikalna chahiye?
A child's loose milk tooth usually comes out by itself within a few weeks; gentle wiggling with clean fingers is fine. Do not force it out. See a dentist if the milk tooth is loose before about age 5, after an injury, with swelling or pain, or if the adult tooth is coming in behind it.
