Dant Me Thanda-Garam Lagna (Tooth Sensitivity): Kaaran aur Ilaj

Medically reviewed by Dr Roshani Arora, BDS, MDS — Endodontics ·

Quick answer

Tooth sensitivity, or dant me thanda lagna, is a sharp, short pain with cold, hot, sweet or sour food that stops when the trigger is removed. It happens when dentine, the layer under the enamel, is exposed by gum recession, worn enamel or hard brushing. A toothpaste for sensitive teeth, used twice daily for two to four weeks, usually helps. Pain that lingers after the cold has gone needs a dentist.

Hinglish me: Dant me thanda-garam lagna yaani sensitivity: thanda, garam, meetha ya khatta lagte hi tez, chhota dard jo cheez hatate hi ruk jaata hai. Ye tab hota hai jab enamel ke neeche ki parat (dentine) khul jaati hai, masude neeche jaane, enamel ghisne ya zor se brush karne se. Sensitive daanton ka toothpaste do se chaar hafte, din me do baar lagane se aksar aaram milta hai. Thanda hatne ke baad bhi dard rahe to dentist ko dikhayein.

Tooth sensitivity is searched about 6,600 times a month across India, and in Jodhpur alone people search for a well-known sensitivity toothpaste about 320 times a month. It is especially noticeable in Jodhpur's summer, when temperatures pass 40°C and people drink iced water and cold drinks all day.

This guide is written by Pain-Off Dental Care in Sardarpura, Jodhpur. It explains the difference between ordinary sensitivity and the kind of pain that means a cavity, a cracked tooth or an inflamed nerve.

Daant me thanda kyon lagta hai? (Why teeth become sensitive)

Teeth become sensitive when dentine, the layer under the enamel, is exposed. Dentine contains tiny channels leading to the nerve, so cold, heat, sweetness or acid reach it quickly. Exposure comes from gums pulling back, enamel worn by hard brushing or grinding, acid from food and drinks, or recently whitened or cleaned teeth.

  • Brushing too hard, or with a hard brush, which wears the enamel at the gumline.
  • Gum recession from gum disease or age, which exposes the root surface.
  • Acidic food and drink: lemon water, cold drinks, pickles, citrus, taken often.
  • Teeth grinding at night, which wears enamel flat.
  • Temporary sensitivity after scaling, whitening or a new filling.

Sensitivity ya cavity? Pehchaan kaise karein (Is it something worse?)

Ordinary sensitivity is a sharp twinge that stops within seconds once the cold or sweet food is gone. Pain that lingers for a minute or more, throbs, comes on by itself or wakes you at night is not simple sensitivity; it usually means decay near the nerve, a cracked tooth or an inflamed nerve, and needs a dentist and possibly an X-ray.

Sensitivity ke liye kaun sa toothpaste? (What helps)

A toothpaste for sensitive teeth, containing potassium nitrate, stannous fluoride or arginine, is the first step; the American Dental Association recognises these ingredients for reducing sensitivity. Use it twice a day for two to four weeks, and rub a little on the sensitive area at night without rinsing. Results build up gradually, so stopping after a few days rarely works.

  • Switch to a soft brush and gentle circles; do not scrub side to side.
  • Wait about 30 minutes after acidic food or drink before brushing, so softened enamel is not brushed away.
  • Drink cold and acidic drinks through a straw, and with meals rather than sipping all day.
  • If you grind your teeth, ask about a night guard.

Jodhpur ki garmi aur thanda paani (Sensitivity in summer)

Sensitivity often gets worse in Jodhpur's summer, because iced water, cold drinks and ice cream hit exposed dentine many times a day, and dehydration leaves the mouth dry. Drinking cool rather than iced water, sipping cold drinks with meals and using a sensitivity toothpaste through the hot months helps. Saliva protects teeth, so staying well hydrated matters.

Dentist kya karega? (In-clinic treatment)

When toothpaste is not enough, a dentist can apply a fluoride varnish or a desensitising agent in one short visit, seal exposed root surfaces with a thin bonded coating, or replace a worn or leaking filling. Gum grafting covers roots exposed by recession. Sensitivity caused by decay or a cracked tooth is treated with a filling, crown or, if the nerve is affected, a root canal.

Common questions

Dant me thanda lagne ka gharelu ilaj kya hai?

The most effective home treatment for tooth sensitivity is a toothpaste for sensitive teeth used twice daily for two to four weeks, with a soft brush and gentle brushing. Avoid lemon, vinegar and charcoal remedies, which wear enamel and make sensitivity worse. Warm salt-water rinses soothe sore gums but do not treat the exposed dentine itself.

Is tooth sensitivity permanent?

Tooth sensitivity is usually not permanent. Sensitivity after scaling, whitening or a new filling typically settles within one to two weeks. Sensitivity from worn enamel or receding gums often improves greatly with a sensitivity toothpaste and gentler brushing, and in-clinic treatments can seal exposed areas. Sensitivity that keeps getting worse should be checked.

Why are my teeth sensitive after scaling?

Teeth often feel sensitive for a few days to two weeks after scaling, because tartar that covered the root surfaces has been removed, leaving them exposed to cold. This is normal and settles as the surfaces calm down. A sensitivity toothpaste helps in the meantime. It does not mean the scaling damaged the teeth.

Can sensitivity mean I have a cavity?

Sometimes. A short twinge with cold that stops quickly is usually ordinary sensitivity. Pain with sweet food in one tooth, pain that lingers, or sensitivity that suddenly appears in a single tooth can mean a cavity, a cracked tooth or a leaking filling. A dental examination, with an X-ray if needed, tells the difference.

Does teeth whitening cause sensitivity?

Teeth whitening commonly causes mild sensitivity to cold for a day or two, which settles on its own. People with already sensitive teeth can use a sensitivity toothpaste for two weeks before whitening, and the dentist can use a gentler gel or shorter sessions. Dentist-supervised whitening does not damage enamel.

Kya sensitivity me Sensodyne jaisa toothpaste kaam karta hai?

Yes. Toothpastes made for sensitive teeth, whichever brand, work by blocking the tiny channels in dentine or calming the nerve, and they help most people within two to four weeks of twice-daily use. Choose one with potassium nitrate, stannous fluoride or arginine. If there is no improvement after four weeks, see a dentist.

Ek hi daant me thanda lagta hai, kyon?

Sensitivity in only one tooth is more likely to have a specific cause than general sensitivity across many teeth: a cavity, a crack, a worn or leaking filling, or gum recession at that tooth. It is worth having that tooth examined, because finding a crack or cavity early keeps the treatment simple.
