Munh Ki Badbu Kaise Door Karein? Bad Breath: Kaaran aur Ilaj
Medically reviewed by Dr Kavya Mathur, BDS, MDS — Periodontics & Oral Implantology · Gold Medallist ·
Quick answer
Most bad breath, or munh ki badbu, starts in the mouth itself: bacteria on the back of the tongue, plaque between the teeth, gum disease and cavities. Cleaning the tongue daily, brushing twice, cleaning between the teeth, drinking enough water and stopping tobacco fix most cases. Bad breath that continues despite good cleaning needs a dental check, and sometimes a doctor.
Hinglish me: Zyaadatar munh ki badbu munh ke andar se hi aati hai: jeebh ke peeche jame bacteria, daanton ke beech ka plaque, masudon ki bimari aur cavity. Roz jeebh saaf karna, din me do baar brush, daanton ke beech safai, paani peena aur tambaku chhodna, isse zyaadatar badbu theek ho jaati hai. Achhi safai ke baad bhi badbu rahe to dentist ko dikhayein, kabhi-kabhi doctor ko bhi.
Bad breath is searched about 3,600 times a month across India, and searches like munh ki badbu kaise door karein are among the most common Hinglish dental questions. Many people assume it comes from the stomach. Studies consistently find that in most cases, around eight or nine in ten, the source is in the mouth.
This guide is written by Pain-Off Dental Care in Sardarpura, Jodhpur, where gum treatment is led by Dr Kavya Mathur, an MDS periodontist. It explains the real causes, the simple daily habits that fix most bad breath, and when it is a sign of something that needs treatment.
Munh ki badbu kyon aati hai? (What causes bad breath)
Bad breath is usually caused by bacteria in the mouth breaking down food and dead cells and releasing sulphur gases. They collect mostly on the back of the tongue, between the teeth, under the gums in gum disease, and in deep cavities. Dry mouth, tobacco, gutkha, onion and garlic, and skipping meals make it worse.
- Coating on the back of the tongue: the single most common source.
- Plaque and food trapped between teeth and under dental work.
- Gum disease (pyorrhea) and deep cavities.
- Dry mouth: morning breath, Jodhpur's summer heat, mouth breathing, some medicines.
- Tobacco, gutkha and paan, which also cause gum disease.
Jeebh saaf karna: sabse zaroori kadam (Clean your tongue)
Cleaning the tongue every day is one of the most effective ways to reduce bad breath, because most odour-producing bacteria live in the coating on the back of the tongue. A traditional metal or plastic tongue cleaner (jeebhi), used gently from back to front a few times each morning, works well. A toothbrush can be used if a cleaner is not available.
Ghar par badbu kaise door karein? (Daily habits that work)
To get rid of bad breath at home, clean your tongue daily, brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, clean between the teeth every day with floss or interdental brushes, drink enough water, and avoid tobacco and gutkha. Mouthwash only masks odour for an hour or two; it does not remove the cause.
- Morning: tongue cleaner, then brush.
- Night: brush and clean between the teeth before sleeping.
- Through the day: drink water, especially in Jodhpur's summer; chew sugar-free gum or fennel (saunf) after meals if you like.
- Clean dentures and aligners daily; take dentures out at night.
Kab dentist ko dikhayein? (When it is more than breath)
See a dentist if bad breath continues after two weeks of good daily cleaning, or comes with bleeding gums, loose teeth, a bad taste, or pain in a tooth. These point to gum disease, a hidden cavity, an infected wisdom tooth or a leaking filling, which cleaning at home cannot fix. A professional cleaning often makes a noticeable difference on its own.
Pet se badbu? Kab doctor ko dikhayein (When to see a doctor)
Bad breath from the stomach is less common than most people think. If the mouth, teeth and gums are healthy and bad breath continues, a doctor should check for sinus or throat infections, tonsil stones, acid reflux, uncontrolled diabetes, which can cause a fruity smell, or kidney and liver problems. Sudden fruity breath with thirst and tiredness needs urgent medical attention.

Common questions
Munh ki badbu turant kaise door karein?
For quick relief from bad breath, clean your tongue, brush, rinse with water and drink a glass of water; chewing sugar-free gum or a little saunf after meals also helps by increasing saliva. These work for a few hours. Lasting relief needs daily tongue cleaning, cleaning between the teeth, and treatment of any gum disease or cavities.
Does mouthwash cure bad breath?
Mouthwash does not cure bad breath; it masks the smell for an hour or two. Alcohol-based mouthwashes can even dry the mouth and make breath worse later. Removing the bacteria from the tongue and between the teeth, and treating gum disease, is what fixes the cause. A dentist may recommend a specific mouthwash for gum treatment.
Why is my breath bad in the morning?
Morning breath is normal: saliva flow drops sharply during sleep, so bacteria multiply and release odour overnight. It is worse after mouth breathing, snoring, a late heavy meal, alcohol or tobacco. Brushing and cleaning between the teeth before bed, then cleaning the tongue and brushing in the morning, clears it.
Can gum disease cause bad breath?
Yes. Gum disease is one of the most common causes of persistent bad breath, because bacteria collect in the pockets between the gums and teeth where brushing cannot reach. Bleeding gums with bad breath is a typical sign. A deep cleaning by a dentist or periodontist removes the source.
Can bad breath come from the stomach?
Occasionally, but much less often than people think. Acid reflux can cause a sour taste and breath, and some stomach conditions affect breath, but in most people bad breath comes from the mouth. If teeth, gums and tongue are healthy and bad breath persists, a doctor should check the sinuses, throat and stomach.
Does gutkha or tobacco cause bad breath?
Yes. Tobacco, gutkha and paan cause bad breath directly, dry the mouth, and also cause gum disease, which adds to the odour. They also stain teeth and raise the risk of mouth cancer. Stopping improves breath noticeably within weeks, and a professional cleaning removes the stains and tartar they leave.
Do children get bad breath?
Children can have bad breath from a coated tongue, cavities, mouth breathing with a blocked nose, enlarged tonsils, or something stuck in the nose in young children. Brushing their teeth and tongue twice a day usually helps. Persistent bad breath in a child, especially from one nostril, should be checked by a doctor.
