Masudon Se Khoon Aana (Bleeding Gums): Kaaran, Ilaj aur Pyorrhea

Medically reviewed by Dr Kavya Mathur, BDS, MDS — Periodontics & Oral Implantology · Gold Medallist ·

Quick answer

Bleeding gums usually mean gingivitis, the early stage of gum disease, caused by plaque left along the gumline. It is painless, which is why it is ignored. Brushing twice a day at the gumline, cleaning between the teeth and a professional cleaning usually stop it within two weeks. Bleeding that continues, receding gums or loose teeth need a dentist, as lost bone cannot grow back.

Hinglish me: Masudon se khoon aana aksar gingivitis hota hai, yaani masudon ki bimari ki shuruaat, jo masude ke paas jame plaque se hoti hai. Isme dard nahi hota, isliye log ise nazarandaaz karte hain. Din me do baar masude ke paas brush, daanton ke beech safai aur dentist se cleaning se aksar do hafte me khoon band ho jaata hai. Khoon jaari rahe, masude neeche jaayein ya daant hilein to dentist ko dikhayein.

Bleeding gums are searched about 12,100 times a month across India, often in Hinglish as masudon se khoon aana. Gum disease is common: the World Health Organization's 2022 Global Oral Health Status Report estimates that severe gum disease affects about one in five adults worldwide, and it is a leading cause of tooth loss in adults.

This guide is written by Pain-Off Dental Care in Sardarpura, Jodhpur, where gum treatment is led by Dr Kavya Mathur, an MDS periodontist. It explains why bleeding gums matter even when they do not hurt, what you can do at home, and when to get them checked.

Masudon se khoon kyon aata hai? (Why gums bleed)

Gums bleed most often because plaque along the gumline has inflamed them, a condition called gingivitis. Other causes include brushing too hard, a new or stiff brush, hormonal changes in pregnancy, blood-thinning medicines, uncontrolled diabetes and, rarely, vitamin C deficiency or blood disorders. Bleeding lasting more than two weeks despite good brushing needs a check.

Ghar par khoon kaise rokein? (What to do at home)

To stop bleeding gums at home, brush twice a day for two minutes with a soft brush angled at the gumline, clean between the teeth daily with floss or interdental brushes, and keep brushing even where it bleeds. Bleeding from gingivitis usually reduces within one to two weeks. Hardened tartar cannot be brushed off and needs a professional cleaning.

  • Do: soft brush, gentle circles at the gumline, fluoride toothpaste, floss or interdental brushes daily.
  • Do: a professional scaling every six months, or more often if advised.
  • Do not: stop brushing the bleeding area. That lets plaque build up and makes bleeding worse.
  • Do not: rely on mouthwash alone. It does not remove plaque or tartar.

Pyorrhea kya hai? (When gum disease goes deeper)

Pyorrhea is the old name for periodontitis, advanced gum disease in which infection destroys the bone and fibres that hold the teeth. Signs include gums pulling back, bad breath that does not go away, pus, gaps appearing between teeth and teeth that feel loose. Periodontitis can be controlled with treatment, but the bone it has already destroyed does not grow back.

Dant hil rahe hain: kya bach sakte hain? (Loose teeth)

Loose teeth from gum disease can often be saved if enough supporting bone remains. Deep cleaning below the gums removes the infection, and the gums then firm up around the teeth. Where most of the bone is gone, the tooth will eventually be lost. Gum measurements and an X-ray show which applies, so an early check gives the best chance.

Gutkha, tambaku aur sugar: masudon ke dushman (Risk factors)

Smoking and chewing tobacco, gutkha or paan are among the strongest causes of gum disease, and they also hide its main warning sign by reducing bleeding. Diabetes and gum disease worsen each other, according to the American Academy of Periodontology. People who chew tobacco or have diabetes should have their gums checked at least twice a year.

Ilaj: deep cleaning se surgery tak (Treatment)

Gum disease treatment depends on how far it has gone. Gingivitis is reversed with a professional cleaning and better daily cleaning. Periodontitis needs a deep cleaning below the gums, called scaling and root planing, often under local anaesthetic, and sometimes flap surgery or grafting. At Pain-Off Dental Care in Jodhpur, this is led by Dr Kavya Mathur, an MDS periodontist.

Gum disease is controlled rather than cured. After treatment, a maintenance cleaning every three months is what stops it coming back, especially for people with diabetes or who use tobacco.

Common questions

Masudon se khoon aana kitna serious hai?

Bleeding gums are an early warning sign, not an emergency, but they should not be ignored. In most people they mean gingivitis, which is fully reversible with better cleaning and a professional scaling. Left untreated for years, it can progress to periodontitis, which destroys the bone holding the teeth and causes tooth loss.

Why do my gums bleed in pregnancy?

Gums bleed more easily in pregnancy because hormonal changes make them react more strongly to plaque, a condition called pregnancy gingivitis. Brushing gently but thoroughly and a dental check-up and cleaning, which are safe during pregnancy, keep it under control. Tell the dentist you are pregnant so any X-rays are postponed.

Which toothpaste is best for bleeding gums?

A fluoride toothpaste used with a soft brush at the gumline is what matters most; brushing technique has more effect on bleeding gums than the brand. Toothpastes marketed for gums can help a little, but no toothpaste removes tartar, which needs a professional cleaning. If bleeding continues after two weeks of careful brushing, see a dentist.

Can bleeding gums be a sign of something else?

Usually bleeding gums are gum inflammation, but they can occasionally point to something else: blood-thinning medicines, uncontrolled diabetes, vitamin C deficiency, or, rarely, a blood disorder. Gums that bleed heavily, bleed without brushing, or come with easy bruising or tiredness need a doctor as well as a dentist.

Masude neeche ja rahe hain, kya wapas aa sakte hain? (Receding gums)

Receding gums do not grow back on their own. Treatment stops further recession by controlling gum disease and correcting hard brushing, and a gum graft can cover exposed roots where they are sensitive or look long. At Pain-Off Dental Care, gum grafting is done by Dr Kavya Mathur, an MDS periodontist.

Does scaling make teeth loose?

No, scaling does not make teeth loose; this is a common myth. Teeth are held by gums and bone, not by tartar. If teeth feel loose after a cleaning, gum disease had already loosened them and the tartar was hiding it. Removing tartar is what allows the gums to heal and tighten.

Does gum disease affect diabetes?

Yes. Gum disease and diabetes affect each other: diabetes makes gum infections more severe, and active gum disease makes blood sugar harder to control. The American Academy of Periodontology advises people with diabetes to have regular gum checks. Treating gum disease is part of looking after diabetes.
