Dant Me Keeda (Cavity): Kya Hai, Kaise Rokein aur Ilaj
Medically reviewed by Dr Suveet Mathur, BDS, MDS — Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery ·
Quick answer
There is no worm in a tooth. Dant me keeda is the everyday name for tooth decay, or a cavity: bacteria in plaque turn sugar into acid, and the acid dissolves the tooth. A cavity that has become a hole cannot heal on its own. Caught early, it is fixed with a simple filling; left alone, it reaches the nerve and needs a root canal.
Hinglish me: Daant me koi keeda nahi hota. Dant me keeda asal me cavity (daant ki sadan) hai: plaque ke bacteria cheeni ko acid me badalte hain aur acid daant ko gala deta hai. Ek baar chhed ban jaaye to cavity apne aap theek nahi hoti. Jaldi pakdi jaaye to choti si filling se theek hoti hai; chhod di jaaye to nas tak pahunch kar root canal ki zaroorat padti hai.
Tooth decay is the most common health condition in the world, according to the World Health Organization, and it is the reason most people in India first see a dentist. Across India, people search for tooth decay about 49,500 times a month and for cavities about 22,200 times, and many search in Hinglish for dant me keeda.
This guide is written by Pain-Off Dental Care in Sardarpura, Jodhpur. It explains what a cavity really is, why some home remedies make it worse, and how to tell when a small, cheap filling is about to become a root canal.
Dant me keeda kya hai? (Is there really a worm?)
There is no worm in a decayed tooth. Dant me keeda is tooth decay: bacteria living in plaque feed on sugar and produce acid, which dissolves enamel and then the softer layer beneath. The brown or black hole that forms looks as if something has eaten into the tooth, which is where the idea of a worm comes from.
Cavity kyon hoti hai? (What causes it)
Cavities are caused by how often teeth are exposed to sugar, not only how much. Each sweet snack or sweet chai gives plaque bacteria about 20 minutes of acid attack. Frequent snacking, sticky sweets, sugary drinks, going to bed without brushing, and a dry mouth all raise the risk. Fluoride toothpaste and saliva repair early damage between attacks.
- Sweet chai sipped through the day, biscuits, toffee and sticky mithai between meals.
- Going to sleep without brushing, when saliva flow drops and acid sits on the teeth all night.
- A dry mouth in Jodhpur's summer heat, or from some medicines, because saliva is what neutralises acid.
- Food packed between teeth that are crowded or have gaps.
- In children: a bottle of milk or juice at bedtime.
Cavity ke lakshan (Signs of a cavity)
Early cavities usually cause no pain, which is why they are missed. Signs to look for are a chalky white or brown spot, food catching in the same place, a rough edge the tongue keeps finding, and a short twinge with sweet or cold food. Throbbing pain or pain that wakes you at night means decay has reached the nerve.
Kya cavity apne aap theek ho sakti hai? (Can it heal?)
A cavity that has become a hole cannot heal on its own, because enamel does not grow back. Very early decay, a white chalky spot with no hole yet, can sometimes be stopped and hardened again with fluoride toothpaste, less frequent sugar and better cleaning. Once a dentist finds an actual cavity, a filling is what stops it growing.
Gharelu upay: kya kaam karta hai, kya nuksan karta hai (Home remedies)
No home remedy can remove a cavity or kill decay inside a tooth. Clove oil can briefly numb pain, and salt-water rinses keep the area clean, but neither treats the hole. Some remedies cause harm: lemon and vinegar dissolve enamel, charcoal and rough manjan wear it away, and tobacco or gutkha on the tooth damages the gum.
Ilaj: filling ya root canal? (Treatment and cost)
Treatment depends on how deep the cavity is. A small or medium cavity is cleaned out and sealed with a tooth-coloured filling in one visit. A cavity that has reached the nerve needs a root canal, and a tooth broken down beyond repair may need removing. At Pain-Off Dental Care in Jodhpur, root canal treatment starts from Rs 4,000, including the crown.
The difference in cost and time between catching a cavity early and late is large. A filling takes one short visit; a root canal takes one to three visits. A check-up every six months, with X-rays where needed, finds cavities between the teeth before they hurt.

Common questions
Dant me keeda lagne par kya karein? (What to do about a cavity)
If you think you have a cavity, see a dentist soon, even if it does not hurt yet. Until then, brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, cut down sweet snacks and sweet chai between meals, and avoid very sticky food. A small cavity is fixed with a quick filling; waiting lets it grow towards the nerve.
Can a cavity spread to other teeth?
Decay does not jump from one tooth to another, but the same bacteria and habits that caused one cavity put the neighbouring teeth at risk. A cavity between two teeth often affects both surfaces. The bacteria can also pass from parents to young children through shared spoons, which is one reason children's decay often mirrors their parents'.
Is tooth decay common in children?
Yes, tooth decay in milk teeth is one of the most common childhood diseases in India and worldwide. Bedtime bottles of milk or juice, frequent sweets and late brushing are the main causes. Milk teeth with cavities should be treated, because decay in them causes pain and infection and can affect the adult teeth developing underneath.
Which toothpaste prevents cavities?
Any toothpaste containing fluoride helps prevent cavities; the World Health Organization and dental associations worldwide recommend fluoride toothpaste for everyone. Adults should use a pea-sized amount twice a day and spit rather than rinse afterwards, so the fluoride stays on the teeth. Herbal or charcoal toothpastes without fluoride do not protect against decay.
Does sugar cause cavities?
Sugar is the main cause of cavities, because plaque bacteria turn it into the acid that dissolves teeth. How often you have sugar matters more than how much: each sweet snack or sip of sweet chai restarts the acid attack. Having sweets with meals rather than between them, and brushing at night, reduces the damage considerably.
Cavity filling me dard hota hai? (Does a filling hurt?)
Getting a filling should not hurt. Small, shallow cavities sometimes need no injection, and deeper ones are filled after the tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic, so you feel vibration and pressure rather than pain. Mild sensitivity to cold for a week or two afterwards is normal.
Can tooth decay cause ear pain or headache?
Yes. A deep cavity in a back tooth can cause pain that spreads to the ear, temple or jaw, because these areas share nerves. Decay that has led to an abscess can also cause swelling and fever. Facial swelling spreading towards the eye or neck, or difficulty swallowing, needs a hospital emergency department straight away.
