Bachchon Ke Daant: Kab Aate Hain, Dekhbhal aur Dentist Kab Dikhayein
Medically reviewed by Dr Suveet Mathur, BDS, MDS — Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery ·
Quick answer
Babies usually get their first tooth at around 6 months and all 20 milk teeth by about 3 years. Start brushing as soon as the first tooth appears, with a rice-grain smear of fluoride toothpaste, increasing to a pea-sized amount from age 3. The first dental visit should be by the first birthday. Milk teeth with cavities need treatment, because they hold space for the adult teeth.
Hinglish me: Bachchon ka pehla daant aam taur par 6 mahine par aata hai aur 3 saal tak saare 20 doodh ke daant aa jaate hain. Pehla daant aate hi brush shuru karein, chawal ke daane jitna fluoride toothpaste, aur 3 saal se matar ke daane jitna. Pehli dental visit pehle janmdin tak honi chahiye. Doodh ke daanton ki cavity ka ilaj zaroori hai, kyonki ye pakke daanton ke liye jagah rakhte hain.
Parents in India search constantly in Hinglish for bachchon ke daant kab aate hain, what to do while teeth are coming in, and what to do about a child's toothache. Tooth decay in milk teeth is one of the most common childhood diseases, and most of it is preventable with a few habits started early.
This guide is written by Pain-Off Dental Care in Sardarpura, Jodhpur, where children are seen at their own pace with a parent beside them. It follows the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry's guidance on first visits and toothpaste amounts.
Bachchon ke daant kab aate hain? (When teeth come in)
A baby's first milk tooth usually appears at around 6 months, most often a lower front tooth, and all 20 milk teeth are usually in by about 3 years. The first adult molars arrive around 6 years, behind the milk teeth, without any tooth falling out. Milk teeth are lost and replaced by adult teeth between about 6 and 12 years.
- 6 months: first teeth, usually lower front.
- 1 year: first dental visit.
- About 3 years: all 20 milk teeth.
- About 6 years: first adult molars come in behind the milk teeth.
- 6 to 12 years: milk teeth fall out as adult teeth come in.
- 7 to 10 years: orthodontic check of the bite and jaw growth.
Daant nikalte samay kya karein? (Teething)
Teething can make babies drool, chew on things, feel irritable and sleep poorly for a few days around each tooth. A clean, chilled (not frozen) teething ring or gently rubbing the gum with a clean finger helps. Teething may cause a slightly raised temperature, but a high fever, diarrhoea or a very unwell baby is not caused by teething and needs a doctor.
Avoid teething gels containing local anaesthetics for babies unless a doctor advises them, and never tie anything around a baby's neck or rub alcohol, honey or sugar on the gums. Honey should not be given to babies under one year at all.
Brush kab aur kaise? Toothpaste kitna? (Brushing)
Start brushing as soon as the first tooth appears, twice a day, with a soft baby brush. Use a smear of fluoride toothpaste the size of a grain of rice until age 3, then a pea-sized amount from 3 to 6, as the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry advises. Parents should brush for young children and supervise until about 7 or 8.
Doodh ke daanton me keeda (Cavities in milk teeth)
Cavities in milk teeth are common and should be treated, even though the teeth will fall out. Decayed milk teeth cause pain, infection and abscesses, can damage the adult teeth forming underneath, and if lost early let neighbouring teeth drift and crowd the adult teeth. The main causes are bedtime bottles of milk or juice, frequent sweets and late brushing.
- Never put a child to sleep with a bottle of milk, juice or sweet drink.
- Keep sweets, biscuits and sweet drinks to mealtimes, not all day.
- Brush last thing at night, after the final milk feed for toddlers.
- Ask about sealants on the adult back molars at around 6 to 7 years.
Pehli dental visit (The first visit)
A child's first dental visit should be by their first birthday, or within six months of the first tooth. It is short and gentle: a look at the teeth and gums, advice on brushing, feeding and fluoride, and getting the child used to the clinic. Early visits mean the first dental experience is a friendly one, not an emergency.
Chot lagne par doodh ka daant (Injured milk teeth)
If a milk tooth is knocked out, do not put it back in the socket, because replanting a milk tooth can damage the adult tooth developing beneath it. Press a clean cloth on any bleeding and see a dentist the same day to check for other damage. A knocked-out adult tooth is different: it should be replanted or kept in milk and seen within the hour.

Common questions
Bachche ke daant nahi aa rahe, kab chinta karein?
Some healthy babies get their first tooth as late as 12 months, which is usually normal. If no tooth has appeared by about 15 to 18 months, see a dentist or paediatrician. Late teeth can run in families, and only occasionally point to a nutritional or developmental issue that needs checking.
Does teething cause fever and diarrhoea?
Teething may cause a slightly raised temperature, drooling and irritability, but it does not cause high fever, diarrhoea or a baby who is very unwell. Those symptoms usually have another cause, such as an infection, and need a doctor. Assuming they are teething can delay treatment of a real illness.
Bachche ke daant me dard ho to kya karein?
If a child has toothache, rinse their mouth with warm water, check for food stuck between the teeth, and give a children's painkiller only at the dose for their weight on the pack or as a doctor advises. Do not put anything on the gum. See a dentist within a day or two, or the same day if the face swells or there is fever.
Is fluoride toothpaste safe for children?
Yes. Fluoride toothpaste is safe and recommended for children in the correct amounts: a rice-grain smear under 3 years and a pea-sized amount from 3 to 6. Teach children to spit rather than swallow, and keep the tube out of their reach. Fluoride strengthens enamel and is the main protection against cavities.
Is thumb sucking bad for teeth?
Thumb sucking is normal in babies and young children and usually stops on its own by 3 or 4. If it continues after the adult front teeth start coming in, around age 6, it can push the teeth forward and affect the bite. A dentist can suggest gentle ways to help a child stop.
Bachchon ke daant ulte ya teede aa rahe hain, kya karein?
Adult teeth sometimes come in behind milk teeth that have not fallen out, or slightly crooked, and many straighten as the jaw grows. See a dentist if an adult tooth is coming in behind a milk tooth that is still firm, or if teeth are very crowded. An orthodontic check around age 7 to 10 catches bite problems early.
Do milk teeth need fillings?
Yes. Cavities in milk teeth should be filled, because decay causes pain and infection and can damage the adult tooth developing underneath. Milk teeth also hold the space for adult teeth until about age 12. Children's fillings are quick and done at the child's pace.
