Jabde Me Dard (Jaw Pain): Kaaran, Ilaj aur Kab Emergency Hai

Medically reviewed by Dr Suveet Mathur, BDS, MDS — Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery ·

Quick answer

Jaw pain, or jabde me dard, most often comes from the jaw joint (TMJ) and chewing muscles, usually because of teeth grinding or clenching, stress or an uneven bite; a decayed tooth, wisdom tooth or sinus can also cause it. Most jaw pain settles with soft food, warm compresses and a night guard. Jaw pain with chest pain, breathlessness or sweating can be a heart attack: call 108 or 112.

Hinglish me: Jabde me dard aksar jabde ke jod (TMJ) aur chabaane wali maanspeshiyon se hota hai, zyaadatar daant peesne ya bheenchne, tanaav ya asmaan bite ki wajah se; sadan wala daant, akal daad ya sinus bhi kaaran ho sakte hain. Zyaadatar dard naram khaane, garam sikai aur night guard se theek ho jaata hai. Jabde ke dard ke saath seene me dard, saans phoolna ya paseena aaye to ye heart attack ho sakta hai: turant 108 ya 112 par call karein.

Jabde me dard is one of the largest clusters of Hinglish health searches about the mouth: left side, right side, near the ear, with swelling, with a headache, with a clicking jaw. Most jaw pain is not serious and settles with simple care. A small amount is a warning sign that needs a hospital, and this guide puts that first.

It is written by Pain-Off Dental Care in Sardarpura, Jodhpur, where jaw joint problems are assessed by Dr Suveet Mathur, an MDS oral and maxillofacial surgeon, so the cause is found before any treatment is fitted.

Pehle ye dekhein: kab jabde ka dard emergency hai (Red flags)

Jaw pain can be a symptom of a heart attack, especially pain on the left side that comes with chest pain or pressure, pain spreading to the arm, neck or back, breathlessness, sweating, nausea or faintness. It is more often missed in women, older people and people with diabetes. If these signs are present, call 108 or 112 and go to a hospital immediately.

  • Hospital now: jaw pain with chest pain or pressure, breathlessness, sweating, nausea, or pain brought on by exertion and eased by rest.
  • Hospital now: facial swelling spreading to the eye or neck, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or a jaw injury with a head injury.
  • Same day: a jaw stuck open or closed, or swelling with fever.
  • Within a few days: jaw pain, clicking or headaches that have lasted more than two weeks.

Jabde me dard kyon hota hai? (Common causes)

Most jaw pain comes from the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and the chewing muscles: grinding or clenching the teeth, often at night and linked to stress, overworks them. Other common causes are a decayed or infected back tooth, an erupting or infected wisdom tooth, sinus infection, an uneven bite, and injury. Pain at the joint just in front of the ear usually points to the TMJ.

  • Teeth grinding or clenching (bruxism), often during sleep.
  • Stress and anxiety, which increase clenching during the day.
  • A decayed tooth, abscess or infected wisdom tooth.
  • Sinus infection, which can feel like pain in the upper jaw and teeth.
  • Chewing gum, very hard food, wide yawning or resting the chin on the hand.

TMJ kya hai? Jabda click karna aur atakna (Clicking and locking)

The TMJ is the hinge joint just in front of each ear that moves the lower jaw. A soft disc inside cushions it. A clicking jaw without pain is common and usually needs no treatment. Clicking with pain, a jaw that catches or locks, or difficulty opening the mouth fully suggests the disc is affected, and examination helps.

Jabde me dard ka gharelu ilaj (What helps at home)

Most jaw pain from the joint and muscles improves with simple self-care over one to two weeks, which the US National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research recommends trying first. Eat soft food, apply a warm compress for 10 to 15 minutes a few times a day, avoid chewing gum and wide yawning, and keep the teeth apart and jaw relaxed during the day.

  • Soft food for a week: dal, khichdi, curd, cut sabzi, soft roti.
  • Warm compress on the side of the face, a few times a day.
  • Lips together, teeth apart, jaw relaxed: notice daytime clenching.
  • Avoid chewing gum, hard nuts, chikki and very large bites.
  • An ordinary over-the-counter painkiller as the pack directs, for a few days only.

Daant peesna aur night guard (Grinding and night guards)

Teeth grinding at night, called bruxism, is a leading cause of jaw pain, morning headaches at the temples and teeth worn flat. Most people do not know they grind until a family member hears it or a dentist sees the wear. A custom night guard made by a dentist takes the force off the teeth and joint while stress, sleep and caffeine are addressed.

Dentist kya ilaj karega? (Treatment)

Treatment starts with finding the cause: examining the joint and muscles, checking the bite and teeth, and an X-ray where needed. Most jaw pain is treated without surgery, with a custom night guard, jaw exercises, soft diet and treating any tooth or wisdom tooth problem. Procedures such as arthrocentesis are kept for joints that lock or stay painful despite months of care.

Common questions

Baye jabde me dard ho to kya karein? (Left jaw pain)

Left jaw pain is usually the jaw joint, muscles or a tooth, but because it can also be a heart attack symptom, check for chest pain, breathlessness, sweating, nausea or pain with exertion first. If any are present, call 108 or 112 immediately. Without them, try soft food and warm compresses and see a dentist if it lasts more than two weeks.

Kaan ke paas jabde me dard kyon hota hai?

Pain just in front of the ear is the classic sign of a TMJ problem, because the jaw joint sits there. It often comes with clicking, a tired jaw after chewing, or pain on waking from night-time grinding. An infected lower wisdom tooth can also cause pain that spreads towards the ear. An examination tells which it is.

Can a tooth cause jaw pain?

Yes. A decayed or abscessed back tooth, or an infected wisdom tooth, often causes pain that spreads through the jaw, sometimes to the ear and temple, and can make chewing or opening the mouth painful. Swelling, a bad taste or pain on biting points to a tooth. Treating the tooth usually ends the jaw pain.

Can stress cause jaw pain?

Yes. Stress and anxiety commonly cause clenching during the day and grinding at night, which overwork the jaw muscles and joint and cause aching, tightness and headaches. Noticing and releasing daytime clenching, better sleep and a night guard help. Jaw pain that started during a stressful period often eases as the stress does.

Jabde me dard aur sir dard saath me? (Jaw pain with headache)

Jaw pain with a headache, especially at the temples and worst on waking, is often caused by night-time grinding or clenching overworking the jaw muscles. A tight jaw in the morning or teeth worn flat support this. A dentist can confirm it and fit a night guard. Sudden severe headache with jaw pain needs a doctor urgently.

Jabda poora nahi khulta, kya karein? (Can't open the mouth fully)

Difficulty opening the mouth can come from a TMJ disc problem, muscle spasm from clenching, an infected wisdom tooth, or oral submucous fibrosis from chewing areca nut and gutkha. If it came on suddenly with swelling and fever, see a dentist the same day. If it has worsened slowly over months in someone who chews, see an oral surgeon.

Will TMJ go away on its own?

Many TMJ problems improve on their own or with simple self-care within a few weeks, and the US National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research advises starting with conservative treatment. Pain lasting more than two weeks, a jaw that locks, or pain that keeps returning should be examined, because untreated grinding keeps wearing the teeth down.
